EVERYONE HAS
THE RIGHT TO A
HEALTHY HOME.

WE ACT for Environmental Justice and our partners are inviting you to join us in putting Healthy Homes First!

WE ACT’s Healthy Homes First campaign focuses on whole home upgrades, improving public and affordable housing by making these spaces healthier, safer, and more energy efficient.

Our homes are where we seek safety, share moments with family, and where we spend most of our time.

Regardless of race or income, everyone deserves a safe and healthy home.

Millions of homes across the U.S. are unsafe and overlooked in terms of home health hazards and energy upgrades. This affects people struggling to pay bills, people of color, and residents in public and affordable housing the most. In our neighborhoods, we’re dealing with dangerous health hazards like lead and mold, extreme temperatures, and barriers to accessing clean, affordable, efficient energy. We can change this. We are dedicated to forging a path toward a more equitable and sustainable future.

  • 61% of low-income BIPOC respondents show concern around the negative effects of using gas in their households.

  • 77% of low-income and communities of color show overwhelming support for the transition from gas to electric in public housing.

  • 74% of national voters show bipartisan support for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

WHAT IS A HEALTHY HOME?

  • Free of health and safety threats such as lead exposure, allergens like pests and mold, fossil fuel pollution, carbon monoxide, radon gas, and other hazards.

  • A safe space protecting against air pollution and extreme heat/cold driven by our changing climate.

  • Energy efficient so that energy bills are affordable, appliances are safer, and emissions are reduced.

Healthy homes help address unfair health burdens.

Public housing residents, people of color and/or low-income, experience higher rates of asthma which is worsened by in-home triggers like pollutants from fossil fuel appliances, mold, and pests.

Healthy homes help communities thrive.

A healthy home supports physical, mental, social and environmental well-being.

Healthy homes protect our families and our future.

A healthy home provides a safe haven from increasingly unsafe outdoor conditions. It also reduces pollution that fuels climate change's deadly effects like wildfires, extreme heat, and unnatural disasters.

WE’RE CREATING HEALTHIER

HOMES THROUGH ADVOCACY

Healthy, affordable housing should be a right for every individual and family.

Alarmingly, the 900,000 households living in federal public housing face conditions that threaten their health and safety, including delayed maintenance, high energy costs, and indoor air pollution from fossil fuel appliances. (PHLC)

To turn national policy goals into reality, WE ACT has launched the Healthy Homes First campaign with our partners building on years of research and advocacy through meaningful partnerships in New York. Our campaign is centered around key policy priorities that would improve the health and safety of residents across the country, while also improving energy affordability and efficiency.

We champion whole home upgrades that address environmental injustices including disproportionate presence of lead, mold, pests, polluting fossil fuel appliances, delayed repairs, and lack of weatherization and climate as well as unnatural disaster resilience.

Now, we’re taking these issues to the halls of Congress.

WE ACT is mobilizing partners, decision-makers, and residents from across the U.S. to make our homes healthy! In May of 2024, WE ACT and allies traveled to the nation’s capitol, meeting with lawmakers and federal agency officials and bringing the message of the ‘Healthy Homes First’ campaign, lived experiences, research, and recommendations for change.
There’s so much more to come…

Healthy Homes First is for the people, by the people - and you’re a part of the movement that will transform our communities for the better.
